Fight for a positive outlook. Fight to keep yourself willing to learn new things. Fight against complacency. Fight against your own pride and ego that will make you think you have nothing to learn or cannot make mistakes.

Life is a constant battle. We must fight to become better. Practice doesn’t make perfect, it makes permanent. And when we practice negative thinking, it becomes permanent and harder to remove.

Bad habits, weak character traits, and negative thinking can derail our lives. And, like a weed, the longer we leave them untouched, the harder they are to pull out of our lives.

I think part of living a successful life is staying in tune with the reality of what you and I need to fight at that particular moment.

When you realize you’ve gone too long without exercising or are eating poorly, you have to fight to put that habit back in your life.

When you realize that when you see a certain person that you feel the hair on the back of your neck bristle and your shoulder muscles tighten, then you need to fight to have a positive attitude and forgive and perhaps have an important conversation to handle the problem. (If possible.)

Sometimes you figure out that it has been too long since you’ve read a good book and you have to go find one.

Other times (like right now for me), you realize that you’re exhausted and you have to rest to be your best.

In Sun Tzu’s book The Art of War, he says

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Know yourself. Know your weaknesses. Know what you need to fight. But also know your enemy. Be keenly aware whether you’re weakening in your spiritual, physical, mental, or emotional life. Then attack the real problem.

Once you know your enemy, you can fight the battles that will truly make a difference in your life. You can improve. You can grow.

For as we grow older, it doesn’t mean we can’t change. It just means we have less time to make the changes we need to be our best.

Life is too short to settle in the desert of complacency when an oasis of opportunity lies just beyond the horizon — but you have to fight to get there.
